The dawn of the 19th century saw a new elite arrive in the Loire Valley, with bankers and industrialists taking over the châteaux.

The Candé estate has since become a symbol of this movement…

Inhabited since the Middle Ages, the site changed hands regularly until the 20th century. Three of its previous owners played a fundamental role in shaping the estate, and were unfalteringly modern : François Briçonnet (Maître de la Chambre aux Deniers to King Louis XII) ; Santiago Drake del Castillo (a notable Anglo-Cuban) ; Charles and Fern Bedaux (Franco-American billionaires). The Candé estate reached the peak if its media notoriety in 1937, when the Duke of Windsor came here to celebrate his marriage to the American Wallis Simpson. Visiting Candé and walking around its grounds, you can’t help but reflect on the natural and technological heritage found on the estate… There are incredible trees, hundreds of years old ; protected flora and fauna ; a telephone exchange ; a hydraulic power station ; bathrooms ; 1930s sports equipment ; a Skinner organ…
